One of the very interesting parts of the Liturgy of the Presanctified derives from the ancient Vespers service, where the priest lit the first evening candle. With that candle he blessed the congregation. That is the source of the blessing with the candle in the Presanctified, where the priest says: ‘The light of Christ shines on all.’ This is an almost sacramental (or mysterial moment). In contrast with other occasions of Grace, there is no obvious joy, but a deep attentive sobriety. We have always been struck by this moment, how solemn it is.
